Pharmaceutical Engineering Department of China Pharmaceutical University was established in 2004, and our faculty consist of twelve full-time teachers with doctorate, including two professors (researchers) and six associate professors (associate researchers). Faculty with senior titles accounted for 67%, and half of the above teachers have overseas education background.

The Department of Pharmaceutical Engineering mainly undertakes undergraduate teaching and disciplinary construction of the corresponding master's and doctor’s programs in Pharmaceutical Engineering (First Brand Major in Jiangsu Province and Excellent Engineer Program in the Ministry of Education). At present, we have set up the Pharmaceutical Engineering, Principles of Chemical Engineering, Experiments on Principles of Chemical Engineering, Engineering Drawing, Process and Application of Traditional Chinese Medicine Preparation and Application, Introduction to Pharmaceutical Engineering Technology, Pharmaceutical Industrialization Production Technology, Drug Release Overview and Preparation,  Advanced Separation of Pharmaceuticals, Chemical Safety Production Technology and Application, Biological Reaction and Mass Transfer Mechanism and other more than ten engineering courses. We edited eleven textbooks including Pharmaceutical Engineering and Pharmaceutical Chemical Engineering, three of which nominated as National Planning Materials and another three nominated as Provincial Ministerial Planning Materials. We presided over two teaching reform projects authorized by the Ministry of Education and Jiangsu Province; we got first prize in National Micro Class Competition, one first prize and two second prizes in provincial teaching reform projects.

At present, research within the department mainly focuses on two directions: preparation of drug particles by the supercritical fluid crystallization technology, and the synthesis, catalysis and development of novel nano-drugs. The former effectively reduces the size, increases the specific surface area of particles and thus improves the drug solubility, dissolution rate and drug bioavailability through the preparation of ultrafine drug particles. The latter based on functional biodegradable biomaterials focuses on intelligent drug controlled release systems, in order to address critical pharmaceutical issues such as long-term stability, targeted delivery and smart responsivity of nano-drugs. Degradable scaffold coating and modification of the material/carrier outer surface by post-polymerization functionalization or direct surface derivatization technique result in properties such as cell-specific adsorption or anti-cell adsorption. Dynamic molecular construction of nanomaterials, multi-scale and multi-level macromolecular assembly of functional molecules, and a series of methods for responding to stimuli are developed based on supramolecular chemistry, functional host-guest interaction and molecular recognition of guanidinium molecules. In the recent five years, our faculty has chaired four projects funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China, five projects funded by Natural Science Foundation of Jiangsu Province, two national key research projects in the Thirteenth Five-year Plan and two key research projects in the Central University of Science and Technology. More than 40 related works were published in Adv. Mater., Small, Chem. Sci., J. Appl. Mater. Interfaces, Chem. Eng., J. Energy, J. Supercrit. Fluid., et al.
